Abu Dhabi: Parents of schoolchildren in the UAE will be allowed flexible working hours on the first day of the academic year to help with drop-offs and pick-ups, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) announced.

Federal ministries and entities have been instructed to permit employees flexibility in arrival and departure times on the first day of school so they can accompany their children to and from school or home. The total duration of this flexibility is limited to three hours on that day, FAHR said.

For parents of nursery and kindergarten children, the guidance extends the flexibility for an entire week, giving families time to adjust to the new pick-up and drop-off routines. Employees may be granted up to three hours of flexible work time per day during this period.

The new policy also allows employees up to three hours for attending parent-teacher meetings, graduation ceremonies, or other school-related events. FAHR emphasised that employers should consider differences in school start dates across various curricula.

Flexibility in attendance and departure is to be granted in accordance with existing workplace systems and requires approval from the employee’s direct manager.
