Disappointing start to Iraq talks

Day one of the Arab League-organised sessions reflects the chaotic state of affairs.

Last updated:

Against the background of an Iraq that is embroiled in an endless cycle of blood and violence, the high level meeting of Iraqi religious and political leaders in Cairo has to bring about hope and trust in a unified Iraq.

It was hence disappointing that the first of the three-day sessions organised by the Arab League concluded with sharp disagreements and protest walk-outs.

The call by Iraqi Prime Minister Ebrahim Al Jaafari and Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani to exclude insurgents and ex-Baathists from attending the meeting is unrealistic as much as unfeasible.

In fact, one wonders to what extent the proceedings thus far are reflective of the chaotic state of affairs in the country. This is unquestionably disgraceful to say the least.

Are the attending delegations serious about their pledge to the Iraqi people of bringing about peace and prosperity or were these hollow promises? The answer lies in the conference's outcome.
