December 1, 2014: Ibolya Ryan, a 47 year-old Romanian-American kindergarten teacher is stabbed to death in the women’s bathroom of Abu Dhabi’s Boutik Mall.

December 4: Arrest of 30-year-old Ala’a Al Hashemi, a UAE national, for the murder. Announcement made by the Minister of Interior.

March 23, 2015: First procedural hearing at the State Security court of the Federal Supreme court for murder and attempted murder of an Egyptian-American doctor and his family.

April 6: Second hearing where Ala’a claims that she has been suffering from audiovisual hallucinations since childhood.

April 14: Third hearing where physical and visual evidence, including a handmade bomb and the murder weapon, is displayed.

April 21: Decision to have Ala’a undergo a mental medical assessment. Witnesses are absent.

April 27: Witness testimonies are heard. These include two female mall employees who were at the scene during the incident, a security guard, an Egyptian-American doctor at whose home a primitive bomb was planted; and his son, who found the device.

May 18: State Security Court Judge Falah Al Hajeri asks for victim’s family to be present to testify. They did not attend.

May 25: Medical report issued. Ala’a is declared responsible for her actions. Public Prosecution arguments reiterate Ala’a’s guilt.

June 6: Ala’a’s lawyer, Abdul Kader Al Haithami, asks for postponement to prepare his arguments.

June 16: Defence arguments delve into details of the medical report.

June 29: Capital punishment verdict issued by the Federal Supreme Court.

July 13: Ala’a executed by firing squad.
