Teenage girl commits suicide in Sharjah
Sharjah: A 19-year-old Pakistani girl committed suicide on Monday night by hanging herself, and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, police sources said yesterday.
The girl committed suicide allegedly by strangulation, and had marks on her throat, but hospital sources could not confirm that this was the sole cause of death, and said that a forensic investigation is currently under way.
The girl was living in Sharjah with her family, and was brought to a hospital in Ajman at 9pm on Monday, accompanied by more than 20 family members, according to a source.
The reason behind the suicide could not be confirmed, and the family was unavailable for comment. The body is now in the police forensic police department until the end of the investigation.
The case was initially sent to a nearby police station in Ajman, but was then referred to the Hera Police Station in Sharjah. Police confirmed the suicide, but refused to give any further information, saying that the case was now referred to the courts.
According to police, suicide cases are rare among girls in the UAE, and the majority are Asian men who have financial troubles or unbearable work pressure. The most recent incident of a suicide attempt occurred in the Umm Al Quwain prison last Sunday, with an Indian man attemped to hang himself from a fan, police sources said.
