Sharjah: Sharjah Police issued fines to 390 people who were caught jaywalking in the emirate in one week.

The police have identified jaywalking as a serious issue and had earlier launched a campaign targeting pedestrians who cross roads from undesignated areas.

Lt Col Omran Bin Elan, head of inspection and traffic control section at Sharjah Police, said despite the intensive awareness campaign launched by Sharjah Police, jaywalkers remained an issue and cause a number of accidents.

Police started issuing fines after the end of the one–month campaign, which rolled out under the theme, ‘Pedestrian safety is our responsibility’ which is aimed at boosting safety on the roads. He said that jaywalking is an offence and the violators get a Dh200 fine.
