Victim's head hit manhole cover when he was pushed during a robbery in Al Sabkah area
Dubai: A salesman faces five years in jail for being held responsible for the death of a worker, who died after he hit his head when he was pushed during a robbery.
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 41-year-old Pakistani salesman, A.A., of assault which led to the death of the Bangladeshi worker, impersonating a policeman and robbing the victim.
"The accused will be deported following the completion of his punishment," said Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif Abdul Jawad on Thursday.
When the defendant appeared in courtroom seven he pleaded not guilty, claiming: "I am not responsible for his death. I didn't pose as a policeman and I didn't steal his wallet."
Prosecutors said A.A. assaulted N.R. and pushed him. N.R. fell down on the pavement and died immediately when he hit his head on a manhole cover. Court records show that the defendant posed as a policeman and asked N.R. for personal identification. When the victim took out his wallet, A.A. snatched it from him.
A.A. tried to run away but the victim chased him until he reached a dark alley. The victim grabbed A.A. who pushed him to the ground. A Bangladeshi cleaner said he saw the defendant asking the victim for identification documents in the Al Sabkha.
The cleaner said A.A. told N.R. that he was a policeman and that he stopped the victim because of drunkenness.
"I saw A.A. take the victim in a poorly lit alley. I tried to convince him to let him go. I heard the defendant asking the victim for his ID… he pushed him and ran away," claimed the cleaner.
Police identified the accused from his photo which fell from him after he fled from the scene.
The primary verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
