Dubai: Police on Thursday opened a bank account at Dubai Islamic Bank for people wishing to donate funds for prisoners, and help release those who are unable to pay off blood money.

Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Commander in Chief of Dubai Police, said: “Our role in society is also to support families that are suffering as a result of the head of the household serving time in jail, and such families have a substantial financial burden in raising their children.”

Last year, the Department of Social Welfare contributed to the release of 30 inmates and at least seven in 2010, while the charity organisation Dar Al Bar Society donated Dh3.05 million and provided financial assistance to more than 450,000 prisoners in 2012 and 111,769 prisoners in 2011.

Residents can make donations addressed to Dubai Police (IBAN) International Bank Account number AE870240 001520032270001.
