Abu Dhabi Police launch investigation to identify parents of baby found dehydrated
Abu Dhabi: A newborn was found abandoned in a garbage bin close to midnight on Sunday, Gulf News has learnt.
The baby boy was found close to the Chamber of Commerce and industry building on the Corniche Street, an Abu Dhabi police official said.
"The baby, probably just two or three days old, was found dehydrated and with a hastily severed umbilical cord", said the official, who asked not to be named.
The umbilical cord was cut off in an unprofessional manner and tied up with a thread, which implies the child was not born at a hospital, he noted.
Police have launched an investigation to trace the parents.
The rescue and ambulance team of the police rescued the baby after passersby who saw newborn reported the incident through the emergency services hotline, 999.
The baby was initially taken to the Corniche hospital for medical care at around 11.45pm and was moved to the Al Rahba hospital a few hours later.
According to an official at the Al Rahba hospital, the baby is now in stable condition. "He is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and is being taken good care of."
Doctors have estimated the baby to be between two to five days old. The hospital is extending its full cooperation to the authorities.
