Anjuna drub Vasco; cosy win for Diwar
St. Francis D'Assisi Anjuna blanked Vasco Abu Dhabi 3-0, while defending champions Vanxim Diwar toyed with Saligao SC Pedro's 5-0 in the Goan Inter-Village Silver Jubilee football tournament at the Iranian Sports Club yesterday.
Though Vasco had stars of yesteryears like Benny D'Costa and Anthony Travasso in their ranks, it was the youthful Anjuna side that dominated proceedings to take their tally to four points after two games.
The Anjuna lads opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Vasco defender Gabriel Nicolau Fernandes diverted the ball into his own goal even as skipper Anthony Fernandes advanced towards the goal.
Vasco goalkeeper Kennedy Noronha denied Anjuna a second goal when he brilliantly saved a penalty in the 13th minute. However, Remy Rodrigues made it 2-0 in favour of Anjuna following a calculated through ball from the left.
Skipper Fernandes wrapped up the tally one minute from the final whistle.
In the earlier match, defending champions Vanxim Diwar got a brace each through Cedric Fernandes (10th, 40th) and Ashok Satardekar (22nd, 24th) and one goal from man of the match Ajay Vaze to take their tally to four points.
