Tawam Hospital, a leading medical facility in the UAE, is setting up a huge emergency unit. It will have state-of-the-art equipment and some 40 beds, said Dr Mohamad Yaman, Director of Medical Affairs at the hospital.

"It will be one of the largest emergency units in the region," he said. Work is in progress and will finish in two months' time, with the unit scheduled to open early next year.

It will have specialised facilities such as examination, operation and resuscitation rooms capable of handling almost any kind of emergency.

Dr Yaman said development is part of a plan by the Abu Dhabi General Health Authority to improve health services.

Under this plan, Tawam Hospital recently announced the setting up of a "Centre of Excellence for Advanced Neuro-logical Diseases". This facility will have advanced neuro-physiology laboratories and diagnostic and treatment facilities.

The health authorities have allocated 'sufficient' budget for the project on which work has already started. This facility is also scheduled to be ready early next year, he said.

Tawam Hospital also plans to upgrade several other facilities with the support of the General Health Authority.

Dr. Yaman said a Bone Marrow Unit would be set up at the hospital's cancer treatment centre. The hospital has been running a modern cancer treatment and research facility that provides service not only to people in the UAE but also to those from GCC countries.

Bone marrow transplant operations are currently not done in the UAE. Patients suffering from thalassemia travel to hospitals in Europe, America and other countries for such operations.

"With this new facility we will be able to conduct bone marrow transplant operations at Tawam Hospital," he said, adding that the new project will make the hospital self-sufficient in providing advanced treatment.
