A teacher of many talents

Introduced as an Indian classical dancer, Tripti Bhupen turned out to be a charming and multi-talented personality. Not only does she dance Bharatnatyam with skilful grace, she choreographs, teaches, sings, writes poetry and even acts on Sony's popular television serial Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka.

Tripti began dancing at a very early age and participated in numerous cultural programmes. With her father serving in the Indian army, she travelled around India with her family and imbibed the various ways and languages of the subcontinent. It was seeing Bharatnatyam dancer Yamini Krishnamoorti in a show that inspired her devotion to this art form and paved the way to attend the Kalakshetra in Chennai for her post-graduation. Established in 1936 for  propagating the artistic traditions of India, this institution is well-reputed for its approach and discipline.

The turning point in Tripti's dance career came in 1987 when she was selected to participate in the Festival of India in Russia.

"I was fortunate to be given this opportunity after only four years of studying in Kalakshetra," she recalls.

Her arrival in Dubai 10 years ago didn't inhibit her creative pursuits or sever her cultural link with the arts of India. She has actively performed for various associations and occasions in the Emirates and abroad.

Some of her interesting experiences include featuring in Zee TV's Antakshari Holi Special in 1998 and choreographing the dandiya and garba dances for their Navratri special. She also played a role in a UAE-based Zee TV serial Kasak, and thereby landed her current part in Sony TV's longest running drama series.

Did acting come naturally to her? "There is so much expression involved in classical dancing, I don't think acting poses too much difficulty for a dancer. Of course experience improves your skill," says Tripti.

Dancing is still her greatest passion. At present she is affiliated with the Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya, the Samarpan school of performing arts in Ahmedabad, India.

She attributes her achievements to a supportive family and someday plans to open a small dance school of her own.
