15 Years For Road Rage Murder
A bus driver was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years in jail for murdering an Emirati man.
The Pakistani driver, Mushtaq Khan Izzat, was arrested and charged in November for running over a 24-year-old Emirati national, Khalid Yousuf, also known as Khalid Arab.
In his testimony, Mushtaq said the incident was a product of road rage.
When his bus bumped the victim's car, he said, the victim and his cousin followed him and blocked his way, and the victim approached the bus on foot.
He said he reversed and fled, fearing the two Emiratis were going to hurt him.
He said they tried to stop him five separate times.
On the fifth try they blocked the road in front of him. He said that as the victim was approaching the bus he slammed on the accelerator and ran over him.
However, according to police records, the bus driver was behind the victim's car, then drew parallel and tried to swerve onto them.
The victim apparently parked his car on the side of the road and got out before the bus driver ran over him.
According to the police report, Khalid Yousuf's body was found about 7.5 metres from the car.
The victim's 17-year-old cousin, who was in the passenger seat, reported the incident to the police and gave them the bus's details.
