Elite players set to showcase skills in upcoming six-team tournament in 2025
Dubai: Cricket has long ruled India’s sports landscape, with the IPL transforming the game into a global powerhouse. But as the appetite for new sporting experiences grows, rugby is now stepping into the spotlight. The Rugby Premier League, the world’s first franchise-based rugby league, is set to debut in India in 2025, offering a thrilling alternative to cricket’s dominance and bringing top-tier global rugby talent to the nation.
As a result of cricket’s dominance, other sports have launched their own leagues, providing a viable alternative for those looking to pursue different athletic passions. The latest addition to this roster is the Rugby Premier League, which promises to bring a fresh wave of excitement to Indian sports.
The tournament, featuring six city-based teams, will debut in 2025 and is part of a 10-year partnership between Rugby India and GMR Sports. Some of the top players from elite rugby nations around the world will showcase their skills in the Rugby Premier League.
“The Rugby Premier League is a game-changer for rugby in India. With World Rugby’s support and GMR Sports’ expertise, we are set to deliver a league that showcases the finest talent and professionalism,” said Rahul Bose, president of Rugby India. “Fans can expect nothing less than world-class rugby action that will inspire the next generation of athletes in our country.”
The league aims to set the foundation for rugby’s growth in India. “The Rugby Premier League is not just a league — it is a movement to bring world-class rugby to India while fostering grassroots development,” said Kiran Kumar Grandhi, Chairman of GMR Sports.
GMR Sports, which co-owns Delhi Capitals in the IPL and is also involved in kho-kho and kabaddi, has been actively expanding its portfolio in sports. With the Rugby Premier League, GMR aims to move up the value chain in the sports business.
PKSV Sagar, President of GMR Sports, said: “GMR Sports has always championed innovation in sports, from cricket to kabaddi and kho-kho. With the Rugby Premier League, we are now moving up in the value chain in the business of sports, from managing sports franchises to managing leagues and sports IPs. We are excited about this partnership with Rugby India to establish a world-class venture as the commercial partner for the league’s operations.”
