Mexico City: Mexican men’s volleyball players are eager to make the country’s first appearance at the Olympic Games in 48 years during next month Rio Games.

Player Jorge Quinones on Friday said that the team has high expectations for the Games, which open on August 5 and run through to 21, reports Xinhua.

“Mexico is ready for great things in the Olympic Games. We are ready to win and to make this experience a great feat above all because it is our return to the highest sporting competition,” said Quinones.

Quinones’ teammate Tomas Aguilera said “the most important tournament of his life” came after hard work.

“It comes from many years of preparation, fellowship and the support from the president of the federation (Jesus Perales) and from Conade (the National Commission of Physical Culture and Spor), as they have always marked out the objectives,” said Aguilera.

The Mexican team are awaiting confirmation of a warm-up tournament in Argentina days before the Games where they will be able to size themselves up against top-level teams.

Mexico will face world No. 1 Brazil, the United States, Canada, France, and Italy at the Games.
