Ayush Mhatre to lead squad that will play three one-day matches and two multi-day games
Dubai: Rising star Vaibhav Suryavanshi will once again be in the spotlight as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India’s Under-19 squad for the upcoming tour of Australia in September. The tour includes three one-day matches and two multi-day games against the hosts.
The team will be captained by Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre, who is enjoying a purple patch. After an impressive Indian Premier League stint with the Chennai Super Kings, Mhatre carried his form into the red-ball format, amassing 340 runs in the recent England tour — a testament to his consistency at the top.
However, it’s the 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi who is expected to attract the most attention. The young batting sensation stole the show during India’s England tour, scoring 355 runs in the five-match ODI series. His highlight came in the form of the fastest recorded century in Youth ODI history — a blistering ton that showcased his extraordinary talent.
Suryavanshi also has a history of success against Australia, having smashed a remarkable 58-ball century in a Youth Test match in Chennai last year. While his red-ball returns during the England series were modest, he will look to make amends in the longer format during this Australian tour, having already emerged as India’s top scorer in the ODIs.
Meanwhile, Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) president Rakesh Tiwari extended his congratulations to Suryavanshi for his selection.
“We have high hopes from Vaibhav. He has made Bihar and India immensely proud with his performances, and now he has a great opportunity to showcase his talent on the Australian tour. I wish him all the very best for this new chapter,” said Tiwari.
