Karachi Provincial chief minister Qaim Ali Shah Monday announced compensation for those officials and civilians who were killed in the Lyari operation and vowed to bring the disgruntled people back into his party fold.

Shah, in a press conference at the chief minister's house told the media that families of police officials who were killed during the week-long action in Lyari would be compensated with two million rupees.

The innocent civilians who were killed in the cross fire between the police and the Lyari gangs would be paid half a million rupees each.

Those who suffered severe injuries would get 200,000 rupees, Shah announced.

Deadliest operation

Officials have not confirmed the death toll but media reported at least 35 people, including six police officials, were killed in one of the deadliest operation against the mafias by the city police which lasted for over a week.

The operation ignited anti-Peoples Party sentiments in Lyari, which has remained a stronghold of the party for the past many decades.

The government also announced a bounty on Uzair Jan, the chieftain of Lyari Balochs. Political rivals blame him of being the chief patron of the gangs operating in Lyari.
