Islamabad: The federal government yesterday registered a case against the besieged militant cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi, along with 25 other extremists, on a charge of killing Special Services Group (SSG) commander Lieutenant Colonel Haroon Islam and injuring several others, including Major Tariq.

The Aabpara police registered the case under the Pakistan Criminal Code and Terrorism Act.

Meanwhile, officials who witnessed the killing of Colonel Islam said "he was planting explosives on the boundary wall of the mosque when extremists sprayed bullets at him."

They added: "Mohammad Maqsood, special guard of Abdul Rashid Ghazi was killed in retaliatory fire.

"Two young Afghan national militants, Fidaullah, 19, and Khanzada, 18, involved in different incidents of terrorism, fired at Colonel Islam and Major Tariq."

Wafaqul Madaris, a body of countrywide religious seminaries warned the government yesterday of a backlash from madarassa students and clerics across the country if security forces continued their siege of Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa.

A delegation of the body headed by Maulana Salimullah Khan conveyed this warning to the head of ruling PML (Q) Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain during a meeting in the federal capital.

The secretary general of Wafaq, Qari Haneef Jalhandri, told journalists the body would call a meeting of its Supreme Council to consider the security operation against the Lal Masjid.
