Dubai: The Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) on Wednesday announced the start of registration for its Space Explorer Camp.

Tailored for students between the ages of 11 and 14, the weeklong camp will provide theoretical sessions and practical workshops conducted by leading experts in space science. Registration will close on July 5 and the camp will be held from July 22.

The camp will be held at the MBRSC facilities, and participants will enjoy the opportunity to tour the centre’s various, high-tech facilities.

Yousuf Al Sheibani, director-general of the MBRSC, explained how this programme is geared to enhance student knowledge and understanding.

“One of the primary objectives of the centre is to develop the intellectual capacity of students, and engender a deeper understanding of space and its technology. This camp is designed to align with this objective and to build a new generation of scientists capable of contributing to these fields,” he said.

He added, “We will hold several sessions of the Space Explorer Camp during the year. The unique experience will encompass theoretical and practical workshops, activities and competitions that will boost creativity as well as equip students with necessary technical skills.”

Adnan Al Rais, Mars 2117 Programme manager at the MBRSC, said: “Allowing the younger generation to participate in such customised workshops will allow them exciting opportunities in technical and scientific disciplines in the future. This approach is in line with the UAE’s efforts to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The UAE is investing heavily in space and we believe this will contribute to the nation’s sustainable development.”

The Space Explorers Camp is one of the pioneering initiatives launched by the centre to ignite students’ interest in exploration and space-related topics.

This initiative will be in addition to the Space Summer Camp for school students, which was organised by MBRSC over the past three years. It includes scientific and technical workshops on space, planets and satellites. In addition, MBRSC has also launched the UAE Zero Gravity, which is a competition that offers UAE-based students the chance to win experiencing zero gravity in the USA.

The Space Explorer Camp is part of the Mars 2117 Programme and it’s funded by the ICT fund of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). Launched in 2007, this fund, which is the first of its kind in the Arab world, aims towards supporting research and development within the ICT sector in the UAE, helping it to grow into a nationally significant industry with a leading place in the world.
