Dubai: An Emirati woman cyclist died in a run-over accident while she was training in Meydan area, Dubai Police said on Thursday.

Mizna Abbullah Ali, a member of Al Wathba cyclist team, was training to participate in the NAS Sport Tournament next week when a speeding car crashed into her from behind on Wednesday night.

Brigadier Abdullah Khadim, director of Bur Dubai police station, said the driver, a Gulf National, has been detained for investigation.

“She was riding her cycle with a group of her teammates. She and three other female cyclists were behind the rest of the group. She stopped on the hard shoulder and called the team’s vehicle to come in order to escort them from behind for safety but while she was making the call, a car ran over her,” Brig Khadim said.

The young driver was speeding and didn’t pay attention to the girl who was within the yellow line.

“Police patrols and an ambulance went to the scene and transferred her to a hospital but she succumbed to the injuries,” Brig Khadim added.

The driver has been referred to Dubai Traffic Prosecution.

Mizna’s death went viral on social media as her club and teammates mourned her on Instagram and Twitter.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Wednesday, a young Emirati was seriously injured when his motorbike crashed into a lamppost in Bur Dubai. He was transferred to a hospital.
