Dubai: An Arab man and his wife sustained serious burn injuries after his son allegedly set fire to his house before attempting suicide in Al Warqa on July 4, police said on Monday.

The son in his 20s set fire to the villa to take revenge from his father and stepmother, an official at Dubai Police said.

The son bought fuel in a container and waited until his 57-year-old father and stepmother in her 30s fell asleep before setting the house ablaze at 1am on July 4.

Soon after, he went to the bathroom and attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a knife. Neighbours saw the fire and alerted Dubai Civil Defence and firefighters and rescue teams reached the house and rescued the three people.

“It is hard to question them now due to their serious condition as they are still recovering from the burn injuries at Rashid Hospital. We found a fuel container in the bathroom beside the son who was found with a knife and we think that he might have burnt the house before attempting suicide,” the official said.

Initial reports revealed that the son wanted to take revenge from his father because he married another woman and left his mother.

“Our investigations shows that he went to buy fuel hours before the fire and put it in his car and went home. He waited until his father and stepmother fell asleep before starting the fire. The son was living outside the country and came to live with his father.”
