Dubai: Dubai Police have arrested a man wanted for 16 financial cases worth Dh328.5 million after he evaded arrest for two months, a police official said.

Colonel Saeed Al Qamzi, deputy director of the Wanted Department at Dubai Police, said the suspect, who hails from Asia, was wanted in financial cases but he was on the run for two months.

“We identified his location and set a trap for him and he was arrested and handed over to concerned authorities to take legal action against him. He was wanted for Dh328.5 million worth of financial cases. That was one of the major arrests that we have made this year regarding the local wanted suspects,” Colonel Al Qamzi said.

Dubai Police revealed that they arrested 87 per cent of local wanted suspects in first quarter of this year and 98 per cent of wanted suspects were arrested by red warrant from Interpol during the same period.

“We arrested four Asian suspects who were wanted for murders in their countries and they were extradited. They were part of 25 wanted suspects who were arrested and sent back to their countries over Interpol arrest warrants,” Colonel Al Qamzi added.

Meanwhile, Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs, praised the efforts of his men as they 11 wanted suspects were brought back to the UAE in first quarter of this year compared to seven suspects during the same period last year.

“Our security programmes managed to bring back the suspects to UAE from outside the country. Dubai Police have excellent relations with many police departments around the world and we cooperate with them by exchanging information, arresting and extraditing the suspects,” Maj Gen Al Mansouri said.

In April, Dubai Police successfully brought back an Asian woman back to the UAE to serve out a 10-year prison sentence issued by Dubai Court of First Instance in a human trafficking case.
