Dubai: A worker has been accused of molesting a teenage girl during Ramadan while she was at a hypermarket, heard a court on Sunday.

The 13-year-old Emirati girl was said to have accompanied her mother to the hypermarket to do shopping for Ramadan in Bani Yas.

The teenager was standing in a queue, when she felt someone clutching her body and pressing against his and then groping her private parts, according to the records.

The teen told her mother what had happened, and the mother took her daughter to the hypermarket’s management to check out the surveillance cameras. The mother reported the matter to the police who apprehended the alleged groper, who turned out to be a 24-year-old Indian worker.

Prosecutors accused the Indian suspect of groping the teenager.

According to records, the suspect abused the fact that the girl was alone and followed her and groped her. The suspect pleaded guilty when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

The 13-year-old told prosecutors that the incident happened at 5pm.

“I left my mother and went to check one of the shelves … I felt someone following me. Then that man [suspect] came from behind and pressed his body against mine. Then he touched me indecently. I told my mother what happened,” she testified.

A Filipina clerk at the hypermarket told prosecutors: “The mother reported the matter to the management and when she checked the CCTV cameras with her daughter, the teenager identified the suspect … then the police were called in.”

The suspect was cited as admitting to prosecutors that he groped and hugged the girl from behind.

A ruling will be issued on July 31.
