Dubai: A worker has gone on trial for threatening to cut the throat of a hairdresser with a kitchen knife if she didn’t pay him Dh2,000, a Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old worker from Vietnam, was charged with threatening to attack his countrywoman on June 6 this year after she kicked him out of a sharing flat in Al Muraqabbat area in Dubai.

According to official records, the 28-year-old hairdresser opened the door for the defendant who put a knife on her throat and threatened to kill her.

“It was a big kitchen knife and he threatened to cut my throat if I didn’t pay Dh2,000. I was saved by a friend who held his hand and pushed him away. The argument happened after I kicked the defendant outside the apartment because he was consuming drugs,” the victim claimed in official records.

A 33-year-old Filipina friend testified that when he saw the defendant putting a knife on the victim’s neck, he held the suspect’s hand and pushed him towards the kitchen with the assistance of two other men.

“They were speaking in Vietnamese. The victim told me that the argument was due to a financial issue,” the witness said.

The defendant confessed to the charge and a verdict will be issued later this month till when he will remain in police custody.
