Holidaymaker gets six-month jail term for biting, beating policewoman

Defendant was drunk when she had catfight at hotel, assaulted policewoman who was handcuffing her

Dubai: A woman holidaymaker was jailed for six months for kicking and biting a policewoman and destroying the window of a police car while she was drunk.

Police were alerted about a catfight between two drunk women in front of the entrance of a hotel in Deira’s Naif area in February.

A police patrol was dispatched and the two women who had been assaulting each other were found in front of the hotel.

When the women were found to be drunk, a policewoman approached the 24-year-old Russian holidaymaker, wanting to handcuff her.

She turned violent and resisted arrest and then kicked and bit the policewoman in her face in a bid to prevent her from handcuffing her.

Officers restrained the accused and put her inside the police car but she repeatedly kicked the window until it broke.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Russian woman of beating and biting a policewoman, destroying a police car.

According to the primary ruling, the accused will be deported after serving the jail term.

She has also been referred to the Dubai Misdemeanours Court to be tried for drinking.

The defendant pleaded guilty when she appeared in court and said: “Yes, I assaulted her but I was under the influence of liquor. I did not mean to assault her. I didn’t bite her but I just pushed her when she tried to handcuff me.”

The Russian told the court that she was not aware of her actions since she was too drunk.

“I broke the glass of the window … I am sorry,” she told the presiding judge.

The policewoman said they went to the hotel after an incident of assault was reported.

“The accused was heavily drunk. When I tried to handcuff her, she refused and assaulted me. My partners helped me retrain her … when she was in the police car, she kicked the window and banged her head on the glass that was broken,” she said.

The ruling remains subject to appeal.
