The UN Security Council will meet Friday to address the situation in Syria’s Idlib, where Russian warplanes are carrying out strikes against rebel forces, US ambassador Nikki Haley said.

The United States, currently holding the presidency of the Security Council, is calling the meeting to discuss the possibility that Syrian forces with Russian support will deploy chemical weapons against the rebels and civilians in the area, Haley told a Tuesday press conference.

“What you are seeing is the president (Trump) saying to Iran, Russia and [Al} Assad, don’t go there. Do not let a chemical attack happen on the people of Idlib,” she said.

“If chemical weapons are used, the United States will respond.”
