Cairo: Sudan President Omar Al Bashir has sacked Foreign Minister Ebrahim Ghandour, a day after the latter criticised the financial situation of the country’s diplomatic missions abroad.
Al Bashir Thursday evening issued a republican decree “relieving” Ghandour of his post, Sudan’s official news agency said in a terse statement.
There was no official explanation for the move.
It was not immediately clear who will replace Ghandour as the foreign minister.
On Wednesday, Ghandour said that Sudanese diplomatic missions abroad have not been paid for months, in an indication of a foreign currency crunch in the country.
He told the parliament that some diplomats have asked to return home due to their “dismal conditions”.
His statement has stirred a controversy in Sudan, with some accusing him of tarnishing the country’s image by raising the issue in public.
Ghandour, 65, became a foreign minister in June 2015.
Last January, he reportedly offered to resign, but his request was turned down.
