Socotra: The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) has organised the second group wedding of 400 brides and grooms in Socotra Governorate, as part of the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to hold a series of weddings, under his patronage, to benefit 2,200 people in eight Yemeni governorates.

The initiative is also part of the UAE’s humanitarian efforts in Yemen during the Year of Zayed.

Dr Mohammad Ateeq Al Falahi, Secretary-General of the ERC, stated the ERC has begun implementing Shaikh Mohammad’s directives under his patronage and the monitoring of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the ERC.

Al Falahi stressed the dire economic conditions in Yemen are preventing its youth from getting married, and the initiative is achieving a range of objectives, including reducing the cost of marriage and promoting social solidarity.

Ramzi Mahrous, Governor of Socotra, expressed the appreciation of his governorate and its citizens, adding that this generous initiative reflected the deep ties between the UAE and Yemen. He said such endeavours are beneficial for the youth, and promote community partnerships.

He also praised the monitoring of Shaikh Hamdan of the ERC’s ongoing efforts to support the governorate’s development and reconstruction, especially in the areas of housing, health and education.
