Dubai: A Ukrainian female visitor will be sentenced in absentia after she failed to appear in court where she is being prosecuted for theft and assault.

Prosecutors accused the 34-year-old Ukrainian woman with assaulting her compatriot woman and stealing 600 euros (Dh3,000).

The suspect, T.L., failed to appear at the Dubai Court of First Instance when Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout summoned her to face the charges.

"Having already been notified about the hearing's date legally, T.L. will be sentenced in absentia because she was absent without any official excuse," said Presiding Judge Barghout.

According to the arraignment sheet, prosecutors said T.L. beat up her 32-year-old compatriot, O.S., and stole her purse, money, passport and visa as well as a mobile phone worth $500..

A 25-year-old Ukrainian girl, L.D. [who stayed with T.L. and O.S.] alleged that she witnessed the suspect stealing money from O.S.'s purse.

The verdict will be heard next week.
