Dubai: The Dubai Court of Family Misdemeanour is to hear a case in which a father has accused his son of issuing a bad cheque.

The alleged incident started when the son, who owns and manages a business, wrote a cheque for his father.

The son had wished to help his father with a financial problem his father's company was facing, the son's lawyer said.

Advocate Mohammad Ebrahim Al Shaiba, who represents the defendant, said the son gave his client a post-dated cheque to enable him to get finance from a bank.

Banks may allow a client to take money from a bank based on the security of a post-dated cheque issued by a customer they consider to be credit-worthy.

Personal problem

The father was supposed to repay the amount of the cheque before it was due, but due to a personal problem that erupted between the two, the father did not do so, Al Shaiba said.

The father had let the cheque bounce to apply pressure on his son to solve the family dispute to the father's satisfaction, the father's lawyer said.

If he did, the father said he would drop the complaint, Al Shaiba said.

The case was transferred from the Court of Misdemeanour to the Family Court to enable the Emirati family to sort the problem privately and quietly, Al Shaiba said.

Court records show that the father had twice failed to appear in court to tell his story under oath and say why he accepted the cheque in the first place.

But he was expected to be compelled to attend the court for the next hearing on the matter, in August.
