Patna: Hours after opposition parties closed ranks to ramp up pressure on the ruling National Democratic Alliance government in Bihar, over the multiple cases of rape and sexual abuse of minors reported at a state-run care home, the Janata Dal United on Sunday rejected calls for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to resign.

The party, though, said it was ready for Supreme Court-monitored probe into the scandal.

“Nitish Kumar won’t resign, neither will we allow him to do that,” JD-U spokesperson KC Tyagi told the media on Sunday. “If the opposition have the guts, they should unseat him in the Bihar Assembly.”

He said the chief minister was a “sensitive person who is feeling ashamed over the incident” but unfortunately the opposition parties were trying to take political mileage out of the “unfortunate and shameful” case.

“How can the rape of young girls, which has shamed us all, be an issue for opposition parties to unite against the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar and demand his resignation. This politics over hapless victims in Bihar is the most unfortunate thing,” Tyagi said, emphasising Kumar would never resign.

Meanwhile, the united opposition demanded that Kumar should step down on moral grounds.

“Bihar is witnessing ‘Rakshas raj’ [demon rule], Sita is being kidnapped every day and Duryodhan is doing chirharan [disrobing the women],” RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged, adding he had to gone to Delhi’s Jantar Mandar as the chief minister’s conscience failed to wake up.
