Follow these RTA rules to avoid mistakes and ride the Dubai Metro responsibly
Dubai: With an average of 900,000 daily riders, the Dubai Metro is one of the busiest public transport systems in the region. In such a shared and fast-paced space, maintaining basic courtesy and civic sense is essential.
It is easy to overlook small things, like blocking the metro doors or stepping into the wrong cabin but these actions can affect the comfort and safety of others.
To promote respectful and responsible behaviour, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has issued a set of courtesy guidelines for all metro users. Here’s a look at the key dos and don’ts to keep in mind when using the Dubai Metro.
Keep shared spaces clear
Passengers carrying bulky items or using e-scooters are reminded to be mindful of other commuters. Fold e-scooters and keep large bags out of the way to avoid blocking aisles or metro doors.
Place bags on the floor, not seats
To make seating accessible for everyone, especially during busy times, place backpacks and larger items on the ground. This keeps seats, walkways, and door areas unobstructed.
Respect designated cabins
The Women and Children Cabin is reserved for female passengers and children. Male passengers should not enter or pass through this section. Likewise, the Gold Class Cabin is for those who have purchased the appropriate card, if you haven’t, avoid entering this area.
Avoid prohibited items
Carrying alcoholic beverages, weapons, sharp tools, or flammable materials is not allowed on any public transport services. These rules help ensure the safety of all passengers.
Keep noise to a minimum
To maintain a quiet and pleasant environment, passengers are advised to speak in low tones and use a low volume setting on their phones.
Follow local customs
Avoid displays of affection or other intimate behaviour while in public transport areas. Respecting local cultural norms contributes to a more welcoming and respectful atmosphere.
Don’t use station sockets
Electric sockets in stations are for official use only. If you need to charge your devices, bring a fully charged power bank to avoid relying on station facilities.
Sit properly
For the comfort and convenience of others, keep your legs tucked in while seated and avoid sitting on the floor. This ensures space is used efficiently and remains accessible for all.
