Ramadan Sharing Fridges 2018 aims to start on the first day of Ramadan, with 74 fridges already registered and mapped out.
Started as a one-off charity act by Australian expat Sumayyah Sayed in 2016, the Ramadan Sharing Fridges initiative has been getting bigger each year since. The fridge is managed by a donor or 'fridge manager', filled up with food and water contributed by donors living in the area. Aimed at workers and labourers who need sustenance at iftar, the fridges offer a means to get free food, juices and water.
Last year, the movement saw around 170 fridges being set up in various areas.
The group handling the initiative don't rent out or sell fridges, but donors who're interested to have one in their area can contact them to get approvals, set up, start getting contributions and spread the word. The 'fridge manager' is responsible for keeping the fridge stocked up throughout the month of Ramadan, and is expected to be around to help donors and workers.
While this non-profit initiative is licensed for Dubai under the patronage of the Emirates Red Crescent, it has no licences yet for Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or the other emirates.
