War 2 still has some way to go before it breaks even
Looks like Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 is flexing hard at the global box office but losing some muscle on home turf. Yes, Ayan Mukerji’s spy thriller has already smashed past the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide in just four days, but India, the film’s biggest battlefield, is proving trickier to conquer.
After an opening of Rs 52 crore opening on Thursday and a fiery Independence Day haul of Rs 57.35 crore on Friday, War 2 suddenly stumbled. Saturday dipped to Rs 33.25 crore across Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil, and Sunday slid further down to Rs 31 crore. That’s a worrying sign, hinting that Monday might be brutal. The film’s extended opening weekend now stands at Rs173.60 crore domestically, according to Sacnilk. The worldwide gross stands at Rs 215 crore in three days. However, as Mukerji film has a reported budget of around Rs 400 crore, the film still has some way to go.
Hindi leads
No surprises here, the Hindi version is carrying most of the weight with Rs 29 crore (Thursday), Rs 44.50 crore (Friday), and Rs 26 crore (Saturday). Thanks to Jr NTR’s presence, the Telugu dub grabbed Rs 22.75 crore, Rs 12.50 crore, and Rs 6.95 crore over the first three days. Tamil, meanwhile, barely moved the needle with collections hovering around the Rs 30 lakh range per day. Sunday’s language-wise breakdown is yet to roll in.
Records broken
With over Rs 150 crore already in the bag domestically, War 2 has overtaken Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs166.58 crore), which wrapped its theatrical run before premiering on YouTube earlier this month. But now comes the real test — Mukerji’s thriller still needs to top 2025’s other box office:
Mahavatar Narshimha (Rs 201.79 crore)
Housefull 5 (Rs 198.41 crore)
Raid 2 (Rs 179.30 crore)
That said, forget catching the real monsters of the year. Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava stands at staggering 615.39 crore, while YRF stablemate Saiyaara is at Rs 331.52 crore. Compared to those, War 2 is barely halfway through the skirmish.
On a director-to-director scoreboard, War 2 has a long road to beat Mukerji's film, Brahmastra – Part One: Shiva (Rs 267.20 crore). And if we’re comparing to Siddharth Anand’s original War (Rs 318.01 crore)? Let’s just say Roshan and Jr NTR have some serious ground to cover.
