This landmark achievement marks a new chapter in the state’s box office history
Thudarum, the latest film starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, has officially entered the record books, becoming a massive blockbuster by grossing ₹100 crore (₹1 billion) solely from Kerala theatres. This landmark achievement marks a new chapter in the state’s box office history, setting a benchmark rarely seen in regional cinema.
Celebrating the milestone, Mohanlal took to social media to share a poster that declared: “A new chapter in Kerala box office history. A 100 crore Kerala gross.”
Expressing heartfelt gratitude to fans, the actor wrote, “#Thudarum storms into the record books with its first 100 crore mark exclusively at the Kerala box office! A milestone that we created together! Thank you, Kerala.”
The film, which hit theatres last month to widespread critical acclaim, continues to witness strong footfalls.
The overwhelming reception prompted Mohanlal to pen an emotional note on social media days before the ₹100 crore feat became official. “I’m deeply moved and truly humbled by the love and heartfelt response for Thudarum. Each message and every word of appreciation has touched me in ways I can’t fully express,” he wrote.
Thanking the entire cast and crew, Mohanlal added, “This gratitude is not mine alone. It belongs to every single person who walked this journey with me, giving their love, effort, and spirit to every frame.” He went on to acknowledge director Tharun Moorthy, co-writer K.R. Sunil, and his co-stars including Shobana, Binu Pappu, Prakash Varma, along with key technicians Shaji Kumar (cinematography) and Jakes Bejoy (music).
Significantly, Thudarum marked the on-screen reunion of Mohanlal and Shobana after nearly two decades. Their pairing, cherished by Malayali audiences, last appeared together in films like Manichitrathazhu, Thenmavin Kombathu, and Mambazhakkalam. This film also happens to be Mohanlal’s 360th career outing and his 56th collaboration with Shobana, adding to its nostalgic and celebratory appeal.
Directed by Tharun Moorthy and co-written by K.R. Sunil, Thudarum was crafted with “care, purpose, and truth,” as described by Mohanlal. Edited by Shafeeque V.B and Nishadh Yusuf, the film’s record-setting run underscores the enduring star power of Mohanlal and the timeless appeal of meaningful Malayalam cinema.
