Despite mounting controversy, Malayalam-language political thriller Empuraan is having the last laugh at the box office.

The star-studded film, led by Mohanlal, is raking in serious money in the Middle East and India —proving that audience interest is far outweighing outrage.

In the first six days of its release in the Middle East , Empuraan collected a whopping $8.5 million (approx. Dh32 million), a testament to Mohanlal’s enduring star power and the film’s wide appeal across the region. According to a the regional distributors Phars Films, the film clocked 743,307 admissions in totals over its first six days of release in seven countries in this region including UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.

Back home in India, the controversial film continues to dominate despite a slight dip in earnings. According to a report in Mint, On Day 6 (April 1), Empuraan earned Rs70.8 million net, according to industry tracker Sacnilk—marking a 29.60% drop from the previous day. Yet, the film’s total net collection over its first three days already touched an impressive Rs780 million, with Malayalam-language shows leading the charge. Notably, collections from the film's Telugu and Tamil versions are also significantly bolstering its numbers.

Adding to its triumph, the film has crossed the $15 million mark in overseas collections within just six days, according to the filmmakers. A celebratory post on Instagram read: “KA’s impact knows no borders. The world is watching."

As Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial continues its juggernaut run, one thing is clear—Empuraan isn’t just weathering the storm, it’s becoming one.
