Diljit clarified that the film was completed before the political situation changed
Dubai: Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh is facing criticism ahead of the release of his film Sardaar Ji 3.
At the centre of the controversy is the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a supporting role — a decision that has attracted backlash in the wake of heightened political tensions between India and Pakistan.
Here’s what happened, and why the film is facing scrutiny:
The backlash stems from the inclusion of Hania Aamir, a Pakistani actress, in Sardaar Ji 3. The film was shot in February 2025, but its release comes shortly after the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which resulted in strained cross-border relations.
In response to the attack, the Indian government restricted the digital presence of Pakistani artists within India and restricted their participation in Indian shows and films.
Speaking to BBC Asian Network, Diljit clarified that the film was completed before the political situation changed.
“When the film was made, the situation was fine… This film was shot in February. A lot of things happened after that which are not in our control,” he said.
He added that the producers had decided not to release the film in India, acknowledging that this would lead to financial losses:
“They will 100% suffer losses because they are removing an entire territory.”
This movie will release in the UAE, Pakistan and other territories barring Indai.
Diljit also addressed the collaboration with Hania Aamir, calling her “very professional” and noting that he generally keeps to himself during projects.
Due to the official stance on banning Pakistani talent from Indian media following the April attack, the producers opted for an overseas-only release. While not formally banned, the climate around the film has made a domestic release unfeasible.
No. Other Indian celebrities have also come under public scrutiny for cross-border interactions.
Earlier this year, actor Abir Gulaal received online criticism after appearing at a European film festival on a panel that included Pakistani filmmakers. While no official action was taken, the incident drew significant attention on social media.
As of now, there has been no formal government statement or censorship order specifically targeting Sardaar Ji 3. The decision not to release it in India appears to have been taken voluntarily by the producers in response to the broader political context.
Sardaar Ji 3 is scheduled for release in international markets. There is currently no plan for an Indian release, and no statement has been made about re-editing or recasting.
