Dubai: Diljit Dosanjh is on a winning streak—and his latest Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 is proof.

The comedy-action entertainer has reportedly delivered a record-breaking first-day box office performance in Pakistan, collecting an estimated $500,000 on its opening day alone.

Released on June 27, 2025, Sardaar Ji 3 has officially become the highest-ever opening for an Indian film in Pakistan, surpassing previous records held by Bollywood blockbusters.

The film’s roaring start has taken many industry watchers by surprise, especially given the challenges facing the country’s cinema sector in recent years.

A strong showing despite market challenges

Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Neeru Bajwa, and Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, Sardaar Ji 3 opened to packed cinemas in major cities across Pakistan. Despite high inflation and a shrunken theatre market, the film struck a chord—particularly in Punjab province, where Punjabi-language content enjoys a loyal fan base.

The film’s opening has now overtaken the record held by Salman Khan’s Sultan, a remarkable feat considering the reduced number of operational screens in the country.

While it topped charts in Pakistan, globally Sardaar Ji 3 holds the third-best opening day for a Punjabi film, following Jatt & Juliet 3 and Carry On Jatta. Experts note that because Sardaar Ji 3 opened on a Friday (typically a strong day for theatre traffic), it’s expected to post even stronger weekend numbers.

Producer confirms losses from limited release

In an interview with NDTV, producer Gunbir Singh Sidhu confirmed that the team has incurred an estimated 40% loss in projected revenue, as the film has had a more limited theatrical rollout compared to their previous hit, Jatt & Juliet 3, which had a global take of over Rs 100 crore.

Still, Sidhu noted that the team was “overwhelmed” by the film’s response overseas and that the decision to go ahead with its release abroad was driven by both fan demand and the need to recover costs.

Diljit responds:

Speaking to BBC Asian Network, Diljit Dosanjh said he stood by the producers’ release plan and was proud of how strongly the film had been received. “A lot of people have worked hard on this, and we’re grateful for the love coming in from around the world,” he said.
