Not all singles are meant for remixing

Dubai: As an artiste, what drives you is quite possibly self-expression, acknowledgement, and applause. Sadly, sometimes, this drive to do something unique and wonderful can lead to some terrible decisions. Such as actor Priyanka Chopra’s decision to drop a single that’s a Hinglish – English plus Hindi – version of the Wham classic Last Christmas.
The cringe-inducing song is for Gurinder Chadha’s upcoming film Christmas Karma, and – well – it’s got rather a lot going on (not in the best way). Fans – us included – are divided, after all, supporting PC is almost a patriotic duty, after all, she’s ‘ours’ [India's] – our export to the world. It’s the reason we stuck though all of Quantico, even when season two became convoluted and why Citadel will remain a must watch.
And we will admit that Christmas classics are easy to mess up – by dint of being classics, they are words and rhythms we are used to. So a re-do would be bad enough. But add in a Hindi layer? It’s got a bit of a cat on piano vibe.
Fortunately, the soundtrack of the movie features more than just Chopra’s vocals though – she joins the likes of Gary Barlow, Billy Porter, Nitin Sawhney, Shaznay Lewis, Pixie Lott, Boy George, and more.
This isn’t PC’s first brush with music – or, at least as it was introduced to us – was back in 2012 with In My City featuring will.i.am, followed by Exotic with Pitbull in 2013. (Mashable reports her first single came out in 2002 with Ullathai Killathe in the Tamil film Tamizhan.) Then she took a break from music and focused on other things.
Considering her acting chops, we really hopes she sticks to her day job. Because Christmas is coming... and sometimes silence is the best gift of all.
