Dubai: The emirate has added another feather to its cap, solidifying its status as a global tourism powerhouse. A new survey by long-haul holiday specialist Travelbag revealed that while traditional favourites like Japan and Canada top the list of dream destinations, Dubai is rapidly emerging as a top-tier choice, especially for Britons, who are actively turning their travel dreams into reality.

This shift highlights Dubai’s growing appeal, particularly among solo travellers, who are increasingly drawn to the city’s unique blend of futuristic luxury and rich cultural experiences, according to the Travelbag survey.

The survey, which polled 1,000 UK travellers, found that a third of Brits (32 per cent) name Japan as their top bucket list destination, followed closely by Canada (31 per cent) and Australia (30 per cent).

However, the results for destinations that people are actually planning to visit tell a different story. The USA leads this list with 5.6 per cent of Brits actively arranging a trip, with Australia (5 per cent) and South Africa (4.9 per cent) rounding out the top three. Dubai has secured a top 10 spot in this category, proving that it’s not just a place to dream about, but a tangible and highly sought-after destination for future travel.

Why solo travellers are flocking to Dubai

The rise of solo travel is a significant trend, with an increasing number of people seeking independent adventures for self-discovery and personal growth. The Travelbag survey found that nearly half (46 per cent) of Brits are planning their holidays around ticking off bucket list experiences, and Dubai offers a perfect canvas for this.

The city’s appeal lies in its multifaceted nature, combining safety, modernity, and a wealth of activities tailored to the independent explorer.

Safety is often a primary concern for solo travellers, and Dubai’s reputation for being one of the world’s safest cities is a major draw. Recent studies have consistently ranked Dubai as a top destination for solo female travellers due to its low crime rate, well-lit streets, and secure public transport.

This sense of security allows visitors to explore the city’s diverse offerings with confidence, from wandering through the historic Al Fahidi district to experiencing the vibrant nightlife.

The solo traveller's perfect itinerary

The survey also revealed the most popular holiday activities for Brits, with shopping and visits to local markets topping the list at 26.7 per cent. Dubai is a paradise for shoppers, offering everything from the glitz and glamour of the Dubai Mall, home to the world’s largest suspended aquarium, to the authentic atmosphere of the Gold and Spice Souks.

For a solo traveller, these markets offer an immersive cultural experience and an affordable way to connect with local life.

Beyond shopping, a significant portion of travellers are interested in visiting ancient ruins and heritage sites (21.4 per cent), and Dubai provides a fascinating glimpse into its past.

The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, with its traditional wind-tower architecture and narrow alleyways, transports visitors back to a bygone era. For the more adventurous solo traveller, Dubai offers a thrilling array of activities, from a desert safari complete with dune bashing and sandboarding to skydiving over the iconic Palm Jumeirah.

How to plan the trip?

Turning a bucket list dream into reality requires careful planning, and Nicola Richardson, Travelbag’s Managing Director, offers some essential tips. She advises travellers to consider the best time to visit, noting that the UK’s winter months are ideal for a sunny escape to Dubai.
Booking in advance is also crucial, especially for securing the best flight prices and popular accommodation.
