Dubai: The first LED flat panel television shipment by Aftron has been sold out just as they launched it, a senior official has said.

"We are waiting for the second lot to come," Ajoy Mathew, General Manager, told Gulf News.

Aftron, Al Futtaim group's consumer electronics brand, said it has launched its exclusive range of LED televisions.

"The ThinTron series of LED televisions combines ground-breaking technological features with cutting-edge designs that are set to transform home entertainment," the company said in a statement.

LED-backlight LCD tele-vision, called LED TV, is a new product in the market, promoted by major global consumer electric brands such as Sony and Samsung.

However, this is the first LED television in the market developed by an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

"Yes, we are amongst the first OEM manufacturers to roll out LED televisions, and I'm sure others will follow," Mathew said.

With the launch of the new LED panels, the UAE-based private label has taken a major step in establishing itself as a force in the consumer electronics sector.

Mathew said: "LED panels will change the way people watch television forever. The new ThinTron series of LED panels from Aftron incorporates state-of-the-art technology which produces superior picture quality."

The ThinTron series of LED televisions are full HD/HD ready and features 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, ultra slim design, HDMI inputs, USB inputs, picture-in-picture, invisible speakers, ultra quick response time and teletext among a range of other features.

In addition these LED panels consume 40 per cent less power than traditional LCD televisions.

Predictions

Analysts say the sale is prompted by its lower price. Prices of Aftron's ThinTron series of LED panels are the lowest in the market.

The 32-inch retails for Dh2,399 while the 40-inch is sold for about Dh3,999 and the 46-inch for Dh5,999, which are at least 35 to 40 per cent below the existing prices.

"With OEM manufacturers getting into LED television manufacturing, we predict the price to fall further in the coming months," a Dubai-based consumer electronics expert said, requesting anonymity.

Established in 1994, Aftron is part of the Al Futtaim Group and Aftron products have been bought by over 14 million customers.

What is LED?

LED stands for light-emitting diode.

An LED display is a video display which uses light-emitting diodes. An LED panel is a small display, or a component of a larger display. They are typically used outdoors in store signs and billboards, and in recent years have also become commonly used in destination signs on public transport vehicles. LED panels are sometimes used as form of lighting, for the purpose of general illumination, task lighting, or even stage lighting rather than display.

There are two types of LED panels: conventional (using discrete LEDs) and surface-mounted device (SMD) panels. Most outdoor screens and some indoor screens are built around discrete LEDs, also known as individually mounted LEDs.
