RAK port to scan containers without opening them
Ras Al Khaimah: The Ras Al Khaimah Customs and Ports Department will install two advanced machines to inspect cargo containers without opening them.
Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ras Al Khaimah Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler, yesterday approved the Dh15 million contract between the department and a Chinese company.
Mohammad Al Mehrizi, Director-General of the department, said one of the machines will be installed at the port and the other will be portable.
He said the machine at the port will be able to inspect 200 containers per hour and the portable one 40-60 per hour.
Al Mehrizi said the two machines are equipped with a "smart program" that will help minimise smuggling through cargo containers.
He said the machines can accurately scan and inspect cargo in the containers without the need to open them.
The machines can penetrate steel nine centimetres thick.
Al Mehrizi said the machines are completely safe for the port staff and as well as the truck drivers. The RAK port staff will be trained by the Chinese firm.
