Oman puts wireless local loop in 11 rural villages
Muscat: Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) recently introduced wireless fixed phone lines service known as Wireless Local Loop (WLL) to 11 new rural villages in the Sultanate.
Omantel plans to connect all regions in order to expand the infrastructure of telecommunications in the country, according to a press release from the company yesterday.
The new service covers the village of Al Sifa in Muscat, the villages Burzaman, Al Aflaj, Al Oyoun, Al Khatm, and Al Hail in Ibra, the villages of Dema and Al Taieen, Mas/Al Harah, Dabrah/Al Qafsah, Al Qutaifi (Ouf) in the wilayat of Dema and Al Taieen, and the villages of Asilah and Al Jawabi in the Wilayat Jalan Bani Bu Ali in the Al Sharqia region.
More than 1,500 subscribers will benefit from fixed line service for the first time in Al Sifah village in Muscat and in some other villages in Ibra, Sur and Dema and Al Taieen in the Sharqia region.
The new service provides the same features as fixed line connected through copper cables. Subscribers can easily make international calls and navigate the Internet. They can also use fax and voice phone, as well as all other features of the normal fixed phone lines.
Oman Telecommunications Company in May 2006 provided wireless Local Loop (WLL) service to nine rural villages in Muscat, Al Batinah, and Al Sharqia to cover more than 2,500 subscribers.
It also connected several villages in Dhofar in March 2006.
