Dubai:  Etisalat Group has announced in a statement its chief executive Ahmad Julfar has resigned.

Julfar, who presented his resignation to the board on Wednesday, is stepping down for personal reasons, Etisalat said in a statement to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange on Thursday.

Etisalat Group has appointed former Vodafone Egypt chairman Hatem Dowidar as acting chief executive until the group restructures at the end of June, the telecom said in a statement.

Dowidar, who most recently served as group chief operations officer (COO) at Etisalat, was the chairman of the board at Vodafone Egypt from 2014 to 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Dowidar also served as chief executive of Vodafone Egypt for five years and has held other senior positions with Vodafone Group in London and Vodafone Malta.

Julfar presented his resignation to the board on Wednesday, the statement said.

The group did not provide details of its restructuring plans.

Etisalat is majority owned by the United Arab Emirates federal government.
