Abu Dhabi: The Abraaj Group announced the launch of energy development arm to invest in the energy sector and address power deficits in global markets.

The private equity investor from Dubai said Themis Energy will support the energy infrastructure projects from concept to operations across target markets.

Themis, acquired by Abraaj to form its energy development arm, was launched in 2013 by Marc Mandaba and other professionals with a strong track record in energy project development.

The company has energy infrastructure projects under development in excess of 1,300MW and has advised several African governments and lending institutions on energy and civil infrastructure related projects, The Abraaj Group said in a statement.

Tas Anvaripour will join Abraaj as a Partner in the energy infrastructure team and Marc Mandaba, the founder of Themis and former private infrastructure investment officer at the African Development Bank, will join the group as Managing Director and Head of Themis.

The Abraaj Group has invested over $1 billion in ten investments in global growth markets in the energy sector. In October last year, it announced a partnership with the Aditya Birla Group to build a gigawatt scale renewable energy platform focused on developing solar power plants in India.
