Dubai: The inflation rate in Abu Dhabi reached 3.3 per cent in June 2018, mainly driven by a rise in transport prices, according to the latest report from the Statistics Centre — Abu Dhabi (Scad).

The figure, which measures the year-on-year increase in consumer prices, puts inflation in the first six months of 2018 at 3.6 per cent.

Scad said in its report that the rise in prices in the first six months came as transport prices increased by 9.4 per cent year-on-year, with transport accounting for 36.4 per cent of the overall increase in consumer prices.

Another key factor behind the rise in consumer prices in the first half of the year was the clothing and footwear category, which accounted for 19.6 per cent of the increase in the Consumer Price Index.

Prices of clothing and footwear jumped 14.1 per cent year-on-year. This follows the implementation of Value-Added Tax earlier this year.

Meanwhile, prices in the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel category fell, Scad said, reflecting a 3.4 per cent decline in house rents.

The report said inflation is likely to reach 3.3 per cent in Abu Dhabi in the third quarter of 2018.
