Economy ministry's efforts to check prices bear fruit
Dubai: The latest consumer price index released by the Ministry of Economy reflects a certain degree of stability in prices of many basic goods, following key measure recently implemented by the ministry to ease the price hike of basic commodities.
The index has revealed that prices of vegetables have improved in various outlets, falling sharply compared to last week's rates.
At Carrefour in Dubai, dry onions (red) imported from India is down from Dh1.80 per kilo last week to Dh1.60; Dubai LuLu Centre offers the same product at Dh0.75 from Dh0.90, while Union Cooperative Society sells it for Dh1.20 from Dh1.25.
UAE cucumber (short), which used to be Dh4.45 per kilo in LuLu Centre, is now sold as low as Dh2.25, while at Carrefour UAE cucumber (short) remains at Dh2.85 per kilo.
Some figures of the basic commodities for the rest of the stores covered by the ministry's weekly survey were not available this week.
The ministry collated the prices last Monday covering around 39 essential commodities.
