Abu Dhabi: Islamic financial institution Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) announced Monday it has launched spatial banking on Vision Pro – Apple’s mixed-reality headset. With this launch, ADIB has become the UAE’s first bank to introduce its flagship banking app on VisionOS - Apple’s mixed reality operating system.

The bank said ADIB’s Spatial Banking enables customers to interact with digital content “in an immersive, three-dimensional space.”  The device's price, which Apple launched last year, starts at Dh 13,999, with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities.

“Through intuitive eye-tracking, gesture control, and voice commands, customers can engage with their banking services in a new way, eliminating the need for traditional screens or physical devices,” the bank said.

The intuitive gestures allow users to interact with apps by looking at them, tapping their fingers to select, flicking their wrist to scroll, or using a virtual keyboard or dictation to type.

Spatial banking is an emerging technology that integrates augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to create immersive, interactive financial experiences. Today, financial institutions are exploring this space to enhance customer engagement and streamline financial management.

How does it work?

ADIB said it optimised the user experience by allowing users to benefit from the eye-tracking feature on Apple’s VisionOS.

ADIB’s new Spatial Banking on Apple Vision Pro allows customers to manage their money in a whole new way. With eye-tracking, gestures, and voice commands, customers can check accounts, track rewards, and view finances on a 360-degree display without buttons.

Customers can view their accounts, cards, and financing in a 360-degree display. They can stay updated with ADIB’s latest offers and financial insights, track their rewards and balances in real time for smarter financial planning, and engage with ADIB TV – a platform that offers financial content and insights.

Fernando Plaza, Chief Digital Officer of ADIB, said, “With Spatial Banking, we are introducing a futuristic approach to finance that aligns with the latest technological advancements while maintaining our focus on convenience and innovation.”

International banks such as JP Morgan Chase, CitiBank, Bank of America, Mastercard and Visa are exploring AR/VR solutions to enhance virtual banking experiences and wealth management tools.

CitiBank is testing virtual branches and immersive financial dashboards for high-net-worth clients.
