Airlines are expected to announce record orders at this weeks Dubai Airshow with reports circulating Emirates will make a record order
Dubai: The Dubai Airshow has emerged as one of the biggest events in the global aviation industry.
Held every second year the show has become the backdrop for some of the largest aviation deals when it comes to aircraft order announcements and 2013 is not expected to be any different.
Emirates are reportedly set to announce an “enormous” order with the airline looking to replace 175 twin-engine 777.
The new Boeing 777X model features upgraded engines, longer fuselage, and enlarged wings. The aircraft can carry up to 400 passengers.
Gulf rivals Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways are both expected to expand their wide-body fleet at the airshow.
With Etihad reportedly evaluating orders from Boeing and Airbus it is expected the Abu Dhabi-based carrier will make an announcement at this weeks show.
While Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker confirmed last month the airline would be making an order at the show he would not share details.
Boeing is likely to announce more than $100 billion at deals at this week’s event with the rumoured launch of its 777x model drawing up to 250 orders from as many as five airlines.
Randy J. Tinseth, Vice President – Marketing Boeing Commercial Airplanes said that while the company does not divulge discussions with any particular airline the Dubai Airshow had traditionally been a place for airlines to announce orders with Boeing.
But questions have been raised on where the 777x will be built after workers rejected a plan linked to the construction of the long haul jet.
Tinseth said Boeing was disappointed that its union did not accept the contract and was now looking at its options.
Rumours have been circulating for other airlines including flydubai which is believed to order at least 50 aircraft worth $5 billion at this year’s event.
Attention is also turning towards other regional airlines including Air Arabia, Jazeera Airways, and flynas (formerly nasir), who are all reportedly eyeing expansion plans requiring new aircraft.
