Dubai: An Etihad Airways flight to Tokyo was diverted on Monday and the return flight has been delayed by 12 hours due to tropic storms in Japan.

Etihad flight EY878 to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport diverted to the Japanese city of Nagoya, which is about 450 kilometres from its scheduled destination, according to the airline’s website on Monday.

“All affected guests are being assisted with their travel arrangements enabling them to complete their journey as quickly as possible,” Etihad said.

Typhoon Mindulle made landfall on Monday with winds of up to 180 kilometres an hour, cancelling hundreds of flights to and from Japan, news website Japan Today reported.

Etihad said on its website that the return EY871 flight to Abu Dhabi would be delayed by 12 hours to depart on Tuesday morning at 8am local time.

The affected aircraft is an Airbus A340-600, according to Etihad.
