The airport handles around 1,300 flight movements daily
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced an ambitious plan to renovate Terminal 2 (T2) of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), addressing the four-decade-old infrastructure built by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The refurbishment aims to cater to the growing demand for air travel and enhance passenger experience, according to media reports.
Temporary closure
The refurbishment of T2 is scheduled to begin in the 2025-26 financial year, with completion targeted by the second quarter of FY26. To facilitate this work, T2 will temporarily close for 4-6 months, with all operations shifting to the newly expanded Terminal 1 (T1) to minimize disruption.
Impact on international flight operations
Currently, T2 and T1 handle domestic flights, while T3 manages international operations. As such, the T2 closure is expected to primarily affect domestic flight operations, with no direct impact on international flights.
IGIA remains India's busiest airport, accommodating 1,300 flight movements daily, including both domestic and international routes.
Key highlights of the T2 renovation
DIAL has outlined a series of upgrades to modernize T2, as reported by various media outlets:
Enhanced passenger facilities: Six new Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) sourced from South Korea will feature autonomous docking technology, wheelchair-accessible ramps, swing doors for operator safety, and cushioned side covers for aesthetics and safety.
Improved infrastructure: Significant upgrades to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as fire safety mechanisms, will ensure secure and efficient operations.
Modern design aesthetics: The renovation will include updated ceilings, skylight designs, smart washrooms, and advanced flooring. Forecourt canopies will protect passengers from adverse weather.
Enhanced connectivity and operational efficiency: Improved road connectivity and real-time flight tracking capabilities with high-resolution Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) will enhance passenger convenience. Upgraded signage will cater to passengers with reduced mobility.
Airside and apron upgrades: Infrastructure wear on aprons and airside areas will be addressed to support increased traffic volumes.
Statements from DIAL leadership
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar highlighted the importance of modernising T2 to support the growing air travel demand, particularly for domestic passengers. In a statement to media outlets, Jaipuriar said, “The refurbishment of the four-decade-old T2 is the need of the hour. Upgrading key infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and elevating passenger comfort will significantly enhance the overall travel experience.”
“With the terminal’s projected passenger capacity expected to peak by FY 2025-26, these enhancements will play a critical role in meeting the demands of air travel growth,” he added.
Commitment to passenger experience and safety
DIAL’s renovation plan for T2 underscores its commitment to improving infrastructure while ensuring passenger safety and convenience. By integrating advanced technology and sustainable practices, the revamped terminal will meet modern aviation standards and support IGIA’s position as a leading global hub.
